Biography:
- 1936 born in Freiberg, Saxony, and raised in Berlin
- 1955 starts her career as actress in theatre and film
- 1967 changes to visual arts
- 1972 invitation to Documenta 5 in Kassel with her documentary about A.S., the hermit Armand Schulthess
- Writes books, paints, makes photographs, sculptures and videos; she has also been teaching at various symposiums and art academies.
- Solo exhibitions, amongst others, in the museums of Paris (ARC 2), Solothurn, Aarau, Chemnitz, Weisbaden, Philadelphia (Golden Paley), Moscow (NCCA), Vienna (MAK), Lucerne, Karlsruhe (ZKM), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.
- Her videos have been shown at diverse festivals and biennales, such as Venice, Kwanhju, Locarno and Sidney.
- 1984 appointed as Pataphysicist
- 2011 receives the Meret Oppenheim Prize
- Lives with Harald Szeemann from 1972 until his death. Together they have a daughter Una Szeemann, who is also an artist.
