- MATTHIAS DEUMLICH
*1962 in Berlin (GER), lives and works in Berlin.
Light, sound, projection, and movement are important aspects of the work of multimedia and object artist Matthias Deumlich. His folded paper ships, driven by fans placed all around them, cavort anarchically across a pane of glass reminiscent of water. Another piece, “Germansushi-Tisch” (German sushi table), takes a totally different approach. As its title suggests, it is a tribute to the meeting of disparate cultures. A table is set with dark metal bowls in anticipation of a festive meal. The motif of a pond covered in lily pads is subtly projected through five of the bowls onto a translucent acrylic mirror suspended over the table and reflected back onto the tabletop. The mirrors allow part of the light to pass through them and onto the ceiling. The result is a pleasant and exotic impression accompanied by the sound of the patter of rain and a storm. The sound of the storm, transmitted on the surface of the table, and the absence of the guests produce an ambivalent mood alternating between poetic beauty and threatening apocalypse.
