- VASSILIEA STYLIANIDOU
*1967 in Thessaloniki (GRC), lives and works in Berlin (GER) and Athens (GRC).
Vassiliea Stylianidous’s work encompasses both installations and videos and performances. In many pieces, she examines displinarian structures like families and architecture as well as history and its effects on human beings. While staying in the small rural town of Plüschow in Brandenburg on a scholarship, she produced a video in which she explored the relationship between private and public places and the existential meaning of life, work, and housing. In her video titled „Let’s make it compact“ (2003), she condensed the town of Plüschow and its landscape into a brand complete with a logo, a designed object, and a trade name. It is an expression of the perfection of product and advertising aesthetics using the methodology of branding. In the promotional clip, the town’s name is modified to “Plu-Show” and publicized as an idea for any location. A computer-generated voice off-screen asks prospective consumers to imagine future forms of existence, transportation, and travel. The subtext undermines the ironic analogy of common market strategies that make everything into a commodity, and instead inspires us to think about neighborliness, community life, and the future.
